This erstwhile primary residence and seat of power of the Nizams of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty (1720-1948 AD) which is now a museum still operated by the royal family should be your first stop in Hyderabad.

Originally intended as four stand-alone palaces (hence the name, “Chow” which means four, and “mahal” which means palace), the Chowmahalla houses the grand Durbar of the Nizam called the Khilwat Mubarak.

In addition, the Clock Tower, the Council Hall, Roshan Bungalow (which showcases Nizam’s collection of vintage cars, exhibition halls and Southern Courtyard (comprising sprawling gardens, fountains and walkways) are also located here.

Built on a hilltop that overlooks the city, the erstwhile summer retreat and the royal guesthouse of the Nizam, the Falaknuma (“Mirror of the Sky”) Palace is an architectural marvel dating back to the 19th century.

With its ornate interiors, grand colonial chandeliers, glittering marble and tilework, the Falaknuma is a charming blend of Hyderabadi architecture with Tudor and Italian influences.

Now open to the public as a heritage hotel, the Falaknuma is a great opportunity to step into the world of the Nizams and Nawabs and feast like a royal guest.

A heritage walk under the tutelage of a well-conversant historian-guide who takes you through the mysteries and legends of the Charminar, Golconda Fort, Mecca Masjid, Qutb Shahi Tombs and other landmarks is a must-do experience.

Depicted on the emblem of Telangana, Charminar and the surrounding Laad Bazaar which dates back to 1591 AD is the heart of the old city.

Legend has it that the Charminar monument was built to commemorate the end of the plague. “Char” means four and “minar” means towers. You can now climb up the towers of the building to get 360° views of the city’s landscape. 

Hyderabad has emerged as a modern center of luxury shopping thanks to its rise as a center of IT and commerce.

Hyderabadi pearls, Golconda paintings, Ittar (perfumes), Bidri metal handicrafts and Pochampally Sarees are particularly famous among visitors.

Originally built in the 11th century, the historic Golconda Fort and the ruined city of the Kakatiya rulers are important national landmarks of India. An important bastion for successive dynasties over the last millennium, the fort has been integral to the history of Telangana.

Located on a hill it gives you panoramic views of the region and hosts an impressive light and sound show in the evenings to showcase the history of the fort.
