The UNESCO World Heritage Bhimbetka Caves comprising 750 rock shelters spread over 10 km in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh are traced back to the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, making them one of the earliest human settlements.

They were discovered in 1957 AD by archaeologist Dr. Vishnu Wakankar during a serendipitous train ride to Nagpur after he noticed an unusual rock formation from his window.

The now-forgotten ancient “City of Joy” Mandu in modern-day Madhya Pradesh used to be the capital of the Malwa region and the seat of multiple dynasties. The city is believed to have reached its peak under the Paramara Dynasty in the 11th century AD.

Its key attraction, “the Jahaz Mahal” built by Sultan Ghiyas-us-din Khilji for 15,000 women in his escort is a magnificent fusion of Afghan, Mughal, Hindu and Mesopotamian architecture.

Every evening on the famous Ghat embankment of the Holy Ganga River in Varanasi, priests perform the special spiritual ritual of “Aarti” comprising an intricate combination of hymns, incantations and bells.
