Located on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, the 377 sq. m. YALA NATIONAL PARK established in 1938 is the island’s most famous national park.

Its wildlife safari is considered the best in the country. Bordering the Indian Ocean, the park was in the direct line of the 2004 Tsunami and was devastated by the waves.

While Yala is home to 44 exotic mammal species including sloth bears, elephants (300-350) and wild water buffalos, and 47 species of reptiles, its marquee animal is the leopard. Yala has the highest density of leopard population in the world.

Previously known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is s a prominent global producer of tea and its splendid tea gardens have in recent years emerged as hubs of the new genre of modern “tea plantation” tourism, and no other destination on the planet is grander than “Little England” Nuwara Eliya.

Central to the country’s economy and history, Nuwara Eliya is known for its Ceylon tea, colonial heritage, scenic beauty, hiking and nature walks. Nuwara Eliya is a must-see destination. 

The idyllic little town of Ella snuggled in the south-eastern Badulla Hills of Uva Province, is famous for its breathtaking scenery, lush green cascading tea plantations, rolling hills and scenic valley.

Popular with international tourists, Ella is also renowned for its iconic hiking and trekking trails like Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge.

These trails comprise dense forests, picturesque tea plantations, beautiful hills and splendid vantage points to view the landscape.

Train rides to Ella from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya are considered the most scenic in all of Sri Lanka. You just cannot miss out on the train ride experience.

Home to a large number of elephants who roam freely in large herds in their natural habitat, the Udawalawe National Park is famous for its wildlife safaris.

Other common wildlife sightings at this park are leopards, sloth bears, water buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles and a huge range of bird species.

Its most stunning spectacle, however, is the annual gathering of wild elephants from the surrounding forest regions at the Udawalawe water reservoir during the dry season (May-September).

Built in the 16th century by the Portuguese in the picturesque southern coastline, and fortified later by the Dutch and the British, the UNESCO World Heritage Site GALLE FORT is one of the country’s most iconic heritage buildings.

The fort is an architectural blend of European and South Asian influences. Inside the fort are cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, churches, mosques, museums, art galleries, and boutique shops.

There is also a stunning beach of golden sands right outside the fort.

A custodian of Sri Lanka’s varied colonial (Portuguese, British, Dutch) past, the Galle Fort is a must-visit landmark.

As a land that is filled with cultural mystique and ancient legacy, you have a bounty of cultural attractions on offer in Sri Lanka. Don’t miss out on witnessing a traditional Kandyan Dance (Udarata Natum) characterized by acrobatic movements and flamboyant footwork.

Other folk dances that are worth watching are Ves (featuring mask-wearing characters from folklore), the Tamil Kolam dance, the Pahatharata Dance of the low-country of the south, and the “Devil Dance” (Yakun Natima), which is performed to appease the evil spirits.
