Camels have been a part of the Rajasthan way of life for centuries. This “ship of the desert” has historically been the primary mode of transportation and trade in a region characterized by never-ending dunes of the desert.

Technology and the invention of the Internal Combustion Engine may have reduced reliance on this magnificent animal but camels are still loved in the region. Like the brave ancestors of this region, you must venture out to the golden sands of the desert on a Rajasthani camel and enjoy a mesmerizing sunset.

Like the Carcassonne Fort in France, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few remaining ‘living forts’ left in the world. Also known as the SONAR QILA (Golden Fort), almost one-fourth of the city’s population lives within the walls of this humongous fort.

Built by the legendary Rajput leader Jaisal in 1156 AD (from whose name the name of this region is derived) the Jaisalmer Fort was a prosperous stopover on the ancient Silk Road which connected Hindustan with the Eurasian continent. You just can’t miss this golden sandstone heritage icon.

During the daytime when the sun is beating down and the mercury rises, a desert is often a cruel place for humans and other living beings. But at night, when the sun sets, the sands cool down and lovely gusts of wind sweep across the landscape, it is quite a refreshing transformation.

The once-thriving and prosperous but now-abandoned 13-th century Kuldhara Village of the Paliwal Brahmins, 10 miles from the city, is known as the “Haunted Village.”

For some reason, the village, after being inhabited for over 600 years was mysteriously abandoned in the early 19th century— the reasons for which are still unclear. The Ghost Village has become a popular attraction due to its haunted allure and eerie ambiance.

Built by King Jaisal, the founder of the city in 1156 AD and later bolstered by his descendent Gadsi Singh in the 14th century, THE GADISAR LAKE located a mere mile from the Jaisalmer Fort used to be the only source of water for the city for centuries.
